3D Digital Scanning is convenient and more comfortable
This technique uses technology in the form of optical cameras to produce digital images.
The dentist inserts the wand into the patient’s mouth and glides it across the bridge of the
bottom and top teeth. As the scanner moves, the computer captures a digital impression of the
patient’s oral cavity. We are able to record highly-detailed images of not only the teeth but also
the gums and jaw.

Digital X-Rays offer higher-quality images and are ready in an instant
These digital images can be viewed by your dentist within seconds of completing your
radiograph. No need to wait several minutes for the film to develop. With the advancement in
technology, digitally captured images offer a much higher quality output than traditional x-rays.
By capturing high-resolution pictures of the oral cavity that can be easily enlarged and
enhanced by your dentist, we can more accurately detect dental issues and identify treatment
options. Digital x-rays can reveal inconspicuous issues such as hidden areas of decay,
infections in the bone, gum disease, tumors, and other abnormalities that are out of sight during
a visual examination.

Digital Imaging has less exposure to x-ray radiation.
Patients are often concerned about radiation exposure whenever an x-ray is needed. By using
Digital imaging, patients are exposed to 70-90% less radiation than in film imaging. Plus, because
digital x-rays are accurate, we decrease the need for retaking images due to poor exposure or
bad positioning of the film. This ultimately decreases the amount of radiation exposure even
further.

Most people overlook this important oral hygiene tool. As a toothbrush gets worn out it cannot effectively clean your teeth.

So how often should you replace your toothbrush?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends you swap out your toothbrush for a new one every 3-4 months. Replacing more often may be required if your toothbrush is showing signs of wear. When the bristles are overlay frayed, the toothbrush can no longer keep your teeth clean and you need a new one.

Some additional reasons to replace your toothbrush include if you have recently been sick or the toothbrush has an odor.

Caring for your toothbrush is also essential. Whether you are using a manual or electric toothbrush it is important to keep it clean. You should thoroughly rinse your toothbrush after every use to ensure no remaining paste or plaque is present.  Storing your toothbrush in an upright position will allow it to air dry properly.  It is not recommended that you store a toothbrush in a closed container. That dry, sticky feeling in your mouth can make speaking or swallowing difficult. It can also cause a sore feeling in the mouth and bad breath. This condition is inconvenient and uncomfortable and can also affect your oral and general wellness.

Problems associated with dry mouth

Saliva is a key part of a healthy mouth. Saliva works to wash away food to prevent tooth decay. When not enough saliva is being produced naturally you may experience these symptoms:

·       Burning sensations or soreness in your mouth

·       Dry lips

·       Bad breath

·       Decreased sense of taste

·       Thrush or similar infections

·       Tooth decay and gum disease

·       Difficulty speaking, eating, or swallowing





What causes a dry mouth?

Dehydration is the most common reason for dry mouth. Lacking enough fluid in your body prevents the production of the saliva you need. Anxiety can also inhibit saliva from being produced.

In some cases, persistent dry mouth can be attributed to an underlying problem or medical condition.

·       Medication: Prescriptions can cause dry mouth as a side effect. This includes some Antidepressants, Antihistamines, and Diuretics. If you have recently changed or added a new medication and are suffering from dry mouth, we recommend discussing this side effect with your prescribing doctor,

·       Blocked Nasal Passage: During the night if your nose is stuffed or blocked you may resort to “mouth breathing” while you sleep. This can cause your mouth to dry out and result in discomfort and other dry mouth symptoms.

·       Diabetes: Dry mouth is a common symptom for individuals with high blood sugar.

·       Radiotherapy: Mucositis, or swelling of the glands, may occur from radiotherapy to the head or neck.

How to treat dry mouth:

Some of the conditions above have specific treatments. We recommend seeing your physician or dentist to diagnose the cause of dry mouth. Your doctor may choose to adjust medication doses or prescribe decongestants or insulin for diabetic patients.

Relieving your dry mouth:

The Mayo Clinic recommends taking these tips to find relief from dry mouth and protect your oral health.

·       Chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free hard candies to stimulate the flow of saliva.

·       Limit your caffeine intake because caffeine can make your mouth drier.

·       Don’t use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can be drying.

·       Stop all tobacco use if you smoke or chew tobacco.

·       Sip water regularly.

·       Try over-the-counter saliva substitutes — such as Biotene Oral Balance.

·       Try a mouthwash designed for dry mouth — they also offer protection against tooth decay.

·       Avoid over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants because they can worsen your symptoms.

·       Breathe through your nose, not your mouth.

·       Add moisture to the air at night with a room humidifier.

·       Avoid sugary or acidic foods and drinks because they increase your risk of tooth decay.

·       Brush with a fluoride toothpaste

·       Use a fluoride rinse or brush-on fluoride gel before bedtime.

·       Visit your dentist at least twice yearly to detect and treat tooth decay or other dental problems.

These solutions are designed to be swished around in the mouth for a recommended 30-60 seconds by the ADA. and then spit out. This aids in rinsing debris and cleans between your teeth. There are many types of mouthwashes available that are targeted to a specific oral care or cosmetic need. When choosing the right mouthwash for you, you should consider some factors. We have broken down some of the characteristics and pros and cons of mouthwash here for you.

Types of Mouthwash –

The FDA regulates mouthwash into 2 categories, cosmetic and therapeutic mouthwashes.

Cosmetic Mouthwash are over-the-counter products that offer temporary control of bad breath. While they do still help rinse oral debris, they lack any antibacterial or antimicrobial ingredients. Making them unable to combat plaque, gingivitis, or cavities.

Therapeutic Mouthwash has active ingredients that address or help to prevent oral conditions.  This includes tooth decay, gum disease, mouth pain, dry mouth, and bad breath. They can also offer tooth-whitening benefits.  Many of these mouthwashes are available over the counter. In some cases, stronger options can be prescribed by your dentist.  Popular types of therapeutic mouthwash include:

  • Fluoride Mouthwashes: prevent cavities and fight tooth decay.
  • Antiseptic: Ideal for those with mouth infections and bad breath but overuse can discolor your teeth.
  • All-Natural: These products are Alcohol-Free and offer a more holistic approach.
  • Dry mouth: These mouthwashes are specially formulated to relieve dry mouth symptoms.

When selecting a mouthwash, we recommend that you check for the American Dental Association seal of approval.

There are some negatives and side effects associated with using mouthwash.

  • Alcohol may be used as a preservative ingredient and due to its negative effect on soft tissue, it has been tied to oral cancer. Alcohol can also cause irritation for some by creating a burning sensation. It can also negatively affect the healing of ulcers and canker sores.
  • Cosmetic solutions for bad breath are only masking the problem. There are more effective medical treatments for halitosis.
  • Tooth staining can occur from the dyes found in some mouthwashes.
  • Salt is found in some mouthwashes in the form of sodium lauryl sulfate. If you are on a low-sodium diet, we recommend avoiding products containing this ingredient.
  • Killing if good bacteria exist in your mouth acts as a natural defense to fight pathogens. Antiseptic mouthwashes kill all bacteria, good and bad. This may reduce your body’s natural ability to fight disease.
